Fractured Veil

Fractured Veil is a survival MMO set in a future where most humans have been wiped off the planet. Waking up in Maui, you must reckon with the mutants that have taken over the world, the wildlife that is out to get you, and the natural environment that has begun to re-take the island of Maui after the humans were wiped out 100 years ago.

Fractured Veil (FRV) is currently in Kickstarter Wave 4 and on its way to Steam Early Access. I started helping out as a design consultant mainly focused on tightening up the economy to ensure itsupports our player journey goals for the different survival player demographics: fighter, builder, explorers, and gatherers.

Using my personal experience playing many games in the survival genre (V Rising, Rust, Conan Exiles, ARK, Fallout 76, Valheim, Tribes of Midgard to name a few), I have revamped the crafting economy to streamline the explore-acquire-craft loop experience for players. We're still gathering data from our latest kickstarter wave and am looking forward to further iterations.

I've also assisted our Lead Designer by fine-tuning the tutorial questline to ensure new players to the game and the genre aren't totally helpless when they drop into Maui.

What I worked on

  • Economy Design

    • Using Miro, I created economy mind maps of competitor games to see what our economy is missing

    • Then diving into our datasheets & google sheets, I re-designed our crafting economy, revamping recipes, materials, amounts of materials, and sources for those materials.

  • Quest Design

    • Assisting with content creation of quests, especially aimed at streamlining the First Time User Experience (FTUE) for new players.

    • Led design efforts on repeatable quest content, designing patterns of play that help players understand economic benefit of quests.

  • Encounter Design

    • Helped design efforts aimed at creating interesting PoI encounters, patrol paths, and dungeon content in UE5.

My Role: Systems Designer

Tools Used: Google Sheets, UE5, P4
